My oh my,

I can't believe that I'm back in Gainesville and already busy with school and meetings. Yours truly is finally a senior! I'm terribly sorry about the lack of posts at the end of the summer, life at Urban Outfitters was incredibly busy...though all of the hard work certainly paid off : )
I plan on posting photos of some highlights of my summer in Philly as well as some deets about my incredible internship very soon, I can't wait to share with you all. In the meantime, I'd love to tell you about one of my latest projects.

My first day back in Gainesville was very exciting because upon my arrival I had a few hours to style looks for my own photo shoot with one of my favorite local publications, The Fine Print. This summer I was asked to write a 'Guide to Gainesville Thrifting' for The Fine Print's "Guide to Gainesville" edition, which comes out today! Of course, I jumped at the opportunity. When I was asked to put together outfits inspired by my love of thrifted finds to be shot for the story, I was both nervous and elated (I'm very camera shy!). I am so thrilled to share some of my favorite second-hand spots with you, as well as show you some of my prized vintage treasures. I think incorporating vintage into your everyday wardrobe is such a wonderful way to enhance your personal style and shop in an environmentally conscious manner. Thrifted pieces are often so beautiful and well made, once you give it a try you'll love mixing in these treasures with pieces currently in your closet. In pulling looks for the shoot, I even surprised myself with how much vintage I wear on a day-to-day basis. Oh how I adore old things!

Gosh, what a great Tuesday!

Skipped over to the office, had a wonderful intern "inspiration" trip to The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, work work work, and then happy hour and Mexican food with the Marketing team.

Frozen drinks on a sunny summer evening call for a quick, silly photo shoot at home to show you one of my favorite go-to outfits for summer.

Wearing: UO Striped Tunic, Vintage belt, Target skirt, Sam Edelman gladiators, Antique jewels

The Philadelphia heatwave has had me putting my cotton blouses and breezy skirts to good use. Breathable fabrics are a must, but because I won't sacrifice fashion for comfort I make sure to accessorize my otherwise basic summer looks. I recently picked up this pretty tunic from Urban Outfitters. I've been opening my heart up to red lately and these sweet stripes fit the bill. The skirt and belt I've had for years. The sandals are actually a replacement pair of Sam Edelman gladiators I bought in NY two summers ago but wore to death. I couldn't imagine my life without them.

My work outfits can get pretty creative, but as of late its been all about the easy layers and feminine silhouettes.

Good evening,

Like I mentioned in my last post, I recently took a lovely trip to Anthropologie. When I saw this frilly little number, I knew I had to have it. It cracks me up that my intern buddies all gave me the "you would buy that!" look when I picked out this pink, bow-printed-bow-trimmed, ruffle frock. What can I say.....I know what I like!

Hey, everyone!

I don't think I could possibly explain how much I love my internship and my life here in Philadelphia, so I think that I'll just leave it at that. I am so happy doing what I am doing right now.

Despite my efforts to look ruffly and cute every single day, the summer heat has me looking all disheveled by the time I get home in the evening, and I'm always too ashamed of my condition to take photos of my outfits after a long day's work.

I decided to just deal with it today and take a photo of my simple, yet fun outfit for this busy Thursday. There are a few little details that I quite enjoyed.

This morning the intern group had a wonderful in-store visit and presentation at Anthropologie. We learned all about the brand, business, and visual display concepts of the store. It was really lovely. Afterwards, we had a private shopping experience. I couldn't help but pick up these beautiful sandals, among other things. Immediately upon purchasing, I put them on for work. They really brightened up my outfit.

This is my new Sabina purse that I've been toting around with me lately. It's everything that I have been looking for in a handbag: large enough to hold all of my necessities, lots of pockets, ruffly(of course), buttery soft black leather, and a removable cross-strap for when I'm a bicycle commuter again. I'm in love.

Oh, and I got a haircut last week! Take a look:

I quite like this new do'. It's a bit androgynous but I like it because its sort of like a geeky third-grade boy's haircut. But in a cute way. Not to mention, it keeps me cool in the Philadelphia sun. I promise my hair looks much prettier when I leave for work in the morning!

I think I also forgot to show you guys the platform sandals that I bought at the beginning of summer. They're my "Summer Shoe".

As you can see, I have a thing for platforms and hot pink hosiery.

I've had my ruffle platforms forever now, I don't know how they're not falling apart. I love my summer platform sandals because they're cute and 70's and have that clog-inspired shape, without actually being clogs (you know?).

I would have shown you my outfit today but after a long day of work and trekking through the city in 6 inch heels, I'm exhausted. Until next time!

Evening, Loves!

This weekend was fabulous.

I managed to experience bowling in a way that I've never experienced it before, followed by an amazing and impromptu stop into the Vans OTW Collection release party! The weekend also consisted of dining with my fellow lady interns, brunching solo at a romantic french bistro, sitting in the park, and much more.

Perhaps the highlight of my weekend was my first Philadelphia flea market trip!

It was booths like these that made my heart swoon...

Hey there!

Gosh I really need to post more often! I guess the internship has just been keeping me soo busy and I'm so tired when I get home. Promise: more updates coming up!!

In other news...

I wanted to tell you guys about a really darling jewelry brand, Lady Vanderbilt!

They recently sent me one of their adorable "Miss Initial" charm necklaces, and I couldn't wait to show it to you. You don't know how happy I was to receive this pretty package in the mail...

My first Philadelphia package, by the way!!

Look at that little beauty! The "Miss Initial" charm necklaces are wonderful because they come in EVERY letter of the alphabet. I never find "F" accessories, so I was especially delighted about this. The necklace is on a delicate gold-colored 18" chain, perfect for layering or wearing alone, and hanging from it is the precious, teeny letter charm and three Swarovski crystals (all 14k gold plated).

We all know that I love to wear many-a-jewel...

Recently I've been particularly intrigued by adding delicate little pieces into my jewelry repertoire, and this charm necklace is perfect. The little "F" makes a very cute statement.

I just adore how teeny it is:

I'd have to say that what I especially love about this little gem is that it only costs $36.00 and the craftsmanship is impeccable. I know I'll be wearing mine paired with my favorite vintage jewels, or just alone with my summer frocks.

When all else fails, dress like a butterfly...

Today was the first day of my internship, and from the bottom of my heart I feel so happy and excited for what is to come. Meeting the other interns, staff, and my fabulous marketing team just has my heart fluttering. I've already learned so much and have met so many wonderful, brilliant minds.

With the help of a few of my besties, I chose this butterfly (or flutterby) inspired outfit for my first day. I was so tired after a long day's work that I couldn't help but do silly poses. I love that when you lift your arms in this adorable Urban Outfitter's MINKPINK dress, you look like you're in flight. I think that this summer will be my metamorphosis...

Home Sweet Home...

Hello, loves!!

I'm terribly sorry about the hiatus! Between being on the Gainesville Fashion Week committee, getting elected Promotions Director of Reitz Union Board: Entertainment, Retail Society, tons of studying for finals, and planning for my summer in Philadelphia, I was forced to put my darling blog on hold. But don't worry, I'M BACK, and The Tonnish Touch is about to be better than ever. This summer, I'll be blogging from Philadelphia, as I'm living here for my internship! I'm so excited to report on this beautiful city. I live right in Center City, Philadelphia, near all of the incredible shops, parks and restaurants. I just got in last night, so today I unpacked, bought some groceries, and then strolled around the neighborhood.

Here is what I wore:

Wearing: Vintage sunglesses, belt, and scarf, Urban Outfitters blouse, Target skirt, Hobo International bag, Steve Madden flats, jewels from Italy.

My studio apartment is absolutely wonderful because it is in an old brownstone, and back when this building was actually someone's mansion, my studio was the library! I have 15' high ceilings, a window that is to die for, and my walls are lined in beautiful wooden bookshelves. Of course, I had to use these shelves to my advantage and create the shoe & accessory closet of my dreams!

Finger Waves:

I've been meaning to get more experimental with my hair now that it's a tiny bit longer. This morning I had some fun with bobby pins and pulled my hair into a messy faux-updo and topped it off with a wreath headband. I've spent this evening watching video tutorials on how to make 1920s finger waves. I've always loved the style and I think that it would flatter my little mini-bob. I cant wait to look like these beauties...

Last week was absolutely wonderful! Here's a recap of all that I was up to:

-Fantastic Flash-Mob on Monday with the help of GFW models and photographers and UF Coveted List

-The Gainesville Fashion Week/UF Coveted List Fashion Show Tuesday night! This was so much fun! All of my best friends came out to support me and we got the word out to UFs campus about Gainesville Fashion Week! The show was so much work, but it was an incredible experience to get to plan, promote, and execute a fashion show from start to finish.

-Wednesday Night: a few on-campus interviews and then another fabulous GFW model rehearsal

-Thursday night was Dahlia boutique's Genetic Denim trunk show! Dahlia was packed with beautiful dresses and incredible jeans. I left with an adorable hot pink dress that I had actually pulled for Tuesday night's fashion show! I'm thinking Dahlia's fashion show will be the perfect night to debut it...

-Joanna Newsom show on Friday night was incredible! She was so wonderful, now I need to learn to play harp!

-Saturday: recovery. I spent Saturday night helping out with BobbyK's video shoot. I'll tell you this much...his fashion show is going to be amazing!!

Weekend Voyage:

I'm about to depart for a weekend trip to Atlanta with my man-friend. We're looking forward to eating at our favorite bistros, consignment shop hopping, and listening to the sweet voice of Joanna Newsom. I'm looking forward to the chilly evening and wearing an ultra-feminine outfit. Think Parisian-blue capelet dress with Sam Edelman bow flats and Betsey Johnson bow accessories placed throughout. Gainesville Fashion Week & Coveted List Fashion Show:

Good evening, darlings!

I'm exhausted, but in such a fantastic mood because I have fabulous news to tell you! It is regarding the event that I've been planning for a few weeks now. If you live here in Gainesville, then definitely come out tomorrow night, March 23rd, to the Gainesville Fashion Week-Coveted List Fashion Showcase!! The event will be held at the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom from 7-9pm! I can't emphasize how much hard work my team and I have done to put on this event, and we are soo happy that it is finally here! Today we had a really successful "flash-mob" event in the Plaza of the Americas, and tomorrow is the big show.

Here's a little info about the event:

Our goal was to put together a showcase that all women on UF's campus could relate to. The show consists of outfits that flatter all body types, heights, and skin tones. There will be 25 looks that are spring-inspired and ultra-feminine. The great part is that the event is a "sneak peek" for Gainesville Fashion Week, as the looks were pulled from boutiques and fashion designers that will have their own runway shows during the April GFW events. The best part is, it's free! I really hope that you'll join me tomorrow evening for the event!

We will have my personal favorite DJs, Thomas and Ernie, playing bangers throughout the night. There will be a little red-carpet entrance, tons of photographers, and the most chic guys and gals in town present at the event. You can also learn about Coveted List, which is an amazing website that I hope to work with in the future. Looks were provided by Dahlia Boutique, Wolfgang Boutique, Mesh Boutique, and designer BobbyK.

This past Saturday, I held the fitting for the event at my apartment. We had soo much fun styling looks for the fashion show and working with our wonderful models.

I feel incredibly lucky to have worked with such an amazing team of girls to put together this event, and the models are also fantastic! Trust me, tomorrow's event is going to be one to remember! Hope to see you there!!

The past two weeks have been such a whirlwind!

Paris was an absolute dream come true. There are so many pictures to sift through, but I'll show you guys some of my most treasured memories from the trip soon. I went on so many adventures, including a quick shopping trip or two.

Since Paris, I've been incredibly busy studying for exams and planning an on-campus fashion show for next week! I've been super involved with extra-curriculars lately. What can I say...I'm a girl on the go! Unfortunately that's taken quite a bit of my free time, but the benefits have been so worth it! Gainesville Fashion Week is coming together beautifully, I have two big interviews coming up for campus organizations, and guess what....

I got my dream internship with Urban Outfitters!!!

I've been having a lot of fun experimenting with hosiery lately. When I saw these adorable socks in the window at American Apparel, I had to hop in and make them mine. They remind me of being a little girl playing in central park after school...

I thought that pairing this otherwise ultra-girly outfit with my boyish booties would be a fun. Can you tell by the monochromatic color scheme that Paris had an impact on my style?

Good evening!

I've spent my weekend in the books studying for an exam I have tomorrow night, but I wanted to do a quick post about the latest addition to my shoe collection. I bought these Dolce Vita platforms the other day at Urban Thread, and I'm absolutely smitten with them. I've been dying for a new pair of go-to heels. I love exaggerated wedges, but can never find anything that's not too harsh looking or that isn't covered in studs . When I saw these beauties in my size, I pounced on them. They have the look of a classic pump, but their extended platform gives them a very surreal quality.

Don't they look exactly like the Yves Saint Laurent Imperiale pumps from the Fall 2009 collection?!

I've been wearing them around my apartment all weekend, as the only places I've been going this weekend have been cafes, libraries, roller derbies and funny dance nights. Surprisingly enough, I think they may be my most comfortable heels. Not bad for 6-inchers...

On another note, I can't believe I'll be in Paris in exactly one week!

Spotted: GFW Model Style

So I told you guys I'd post about some GFW style, and I'm keeping my promise! I couldn't help but ask model, David, if I could photograph him. From head to toe, this dreamboy exudes an incredible urban-chic sense of style. I love that his outfit can take him from campus--to dinner--to a club. Do I even have to bring up the HAIR?! David exemplifies exactly what it takes to be a street-style icon: confidence, relaxed fits, and statement accessories. Unfortunately for the rest of us, they don't sell swagga by the bottle.

Gainesville Fashion Week: My New Life!

Good evening, everyone!

I've been living the life of a crazy event planner lately, but it feels like Gainesville Fashion Week 2010 is really happening now! I'm constantly calling, texting, tweeting, and emailing, but the thrill of putting together this amazing event makes me love my new frantic fashion life. Tonight was our model callback event, and we squeezed 93 models, plus judges, press, spectators and the GFW team into Sharab Lounge for an incredible night of strutting and sass. Im exhausted, but at the same time so excited. Last week revolved around our Modeling Clinic (last Wednesday), Casting Call (all day Sunday), and tonight's Callbacks. What's next: committee meeting Friday and setting up an on-campus fashion show with UF Coveted List and Retail Society, among other things. Oh yeah...and tons of studying!

My New Mini-Bob

Best Friends and Vintage Collars:

Hey, everyone!

I wanted to post all weekend but I got a bit caught up with sewing projects, seeing friends and prepping for Valentines day. It was a lovely weekend but all play and NO work has led to a pretty hefty to-do list for me. One of the highlights of my weekend was actually that Leah and I shared our 2-year friendship anniversary on Thursday night! We exchanged gifts and then went to an adorable short-film movie screening with some friends. It was magical.

Over winter break my mom surprised me by gifting me a day-long sewing lesson with one of her friends who is a talented seamstress. I learned so much, and have been trying my hardest to put my skills to good use lately. For our anniversary, I made Leah this delicate flower brooch with recycled lace trim that she actually found for me a few months ago.

It looks beautiful on her ruffly Juicy coat!

Leah gave me these two BEAUTIFUL vintage collars, and I've been wearing them non-stop. On Thursday night, we got to talking about collections and I realized that I have pretty large collections of various vintage items. I figured that I'd show you the lovely collars that Leah gave me, and then show you my vintage collar collection. The first two (and the pearl one) are from my sweet best friend, and the rest I've collected throughout my thrifting adventures...

Inspired By: Proenza Schouler

Proenza Schouler has been blowing me away these past few seasons, but I've fallen smitten with their Pre-Fall 2010 collection. Ever since I made my two pairs of "prepster shorts", I can't stop putting together prep-school inspired outfits, with a twist. I love wearing blouses and my cuffed shorts with fluorescent tights or a sequin cardigan. What I adore about this collection is that it incorporates two of my current fashion obsessions, geek-chic and giant furs.

Today I wanted to put together an outfit inspired by this collection, but with a girly "Flavia" twist. I really loved the look of this crisp shirt and grey smarty-pants. I decided to add pale pink tights, ruffles and bows to the mix:

This look is the one that I may have fallen most in love with, mainly because it highlights my affinity for crazy furs. Doesn't this coat look exactly like the one that I thrifted a few months back?!

That was my Proenza Schouler-inspired look of the day. I've decided that I need more crisp shirts, sweater-dresses, and socks. Oh, and that beautiful piece of leather-ware is a leather folio that I bought in Florence this summer for my sweetheart. I borrow it every chance that I get. As I've stated before, I've been so busy lately, but definitely busy in a good way. I've been doing a lot in order to work on gaining more experience in fashion and trying to take on new things. I'm so excited because I was recently hired as the production assistant and model coordinator for the Gainesville Fashion Week 2010 team! Of course my lips are sealed as to the top secret details but I can keep you guys posted on all of the important dates and events to look forward to.

Fashion Week should be amazing this season because the production will be bigger and better than ever, and the theme is totally jet-set. The biggest thing that we have coming up right now is the Model Casting Call! You and all of your chic and beautiful friends should go to the casting call on February 21st at the Neutral 7 offices here in Gainesville. Don't be shy, being a model is so much fun and if you're worried that you don't have professional experience strutting your stuff, the GFW team will be hosting a free modeling clinic on February 17th where you can practice your walk, perfect your poses, and socialize with other models and the event team. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have, but I really encourage you to come out and be a part of such an amazing event for our local community. Plus, we'll get to work together! It's still early and there will be a lot more promotion for the event, but just think about it my dearies...

Pants On Fire:

These past two weeks have been so hectic! I'm sorry for not posting, but I'm finally finished with my first set of mid-terms so there should be a lot going on with The Tonnish Touch now. Although this outfit isn't very exciting, I wanted to post my favorite pair of granny-slacks. They made their debut months ago at a party, but I never had the courage to wear them again. The other day I decided to combine them with sheer and nerdy layers, perfectly fit for my long study hours. I discovered that these are the most comfortable pants and now I want to wear them everywhere! I'm on the quest for more of these silly trousers. As you can see by my photos, I'm having trouble dealing with my hair growing out. I just don't know what to do to it next!

I also wanted to present my new vintage dress form to you! She's a gift from a sweetheart. I'm absolutely in love and I keep changing her outfit. She's perfect for helping me alter vintage finds and also piece together DIY's when I don't have a helping hand around. I still have to put her on a stand but can't help but brag about having such a wonderful treasure. Right now she's just sporting the pearl collar that Leah gave me for my birthday. Expect plenty of accessories posts now that I have this precious model.

D.I.Y. Lady Gaga Bow Hairpiece

Hey Everyone! Here's another D.I.Y. that I've been avidly researching and looking forward to posting! There's a little backstory, here goes:

I was recently contacted by a fashion enthusiast/journalist named Katie. She messaged me about the possibility of writing a feature story on me, and I absolutely flipped at the opportunity! Once her pitch was approved, I had to think of some ways to show why I love fashion and what I do to embrace it. So, we spent the day going on tonnish adventures, including lattes at Karma Cream, a trip to Beauty Max, an impromptu voyage to the Salvation Army (where I scored two Mad Men-esque tops and she found amazing cream booties), a stop at Loop de Loop, and finally, this D.I.Y. project at my humble abode. What I have for you here is a step by step tutorial on how to make the infamous Lady Gaga hair bow out of some cheap extensions.

What You'll Need:

1) Long hair extension ($3.99 at Beauty Max)

2) Straightening iron and damp rag

3) Hot glue gun

4) Paper/cardboard surface (for easy cleanup)

5) Duck-bill clips (.99 at Beauty Max) and bobby pins (.99 at Beauty Max)

6) Small elastic bands

The best part about this project is that the supplies only added up to a budget friendly $6.39!

This is the brand of "weave" that I used for my project. It was super cheap and ended matching perfectly with my hair! (crucial to the execution of the hair bow)

Step 1: Loop Your Weave

What you want to do first, is get an idea of how big you want your bow to be, and play around a bit with your strip of hair until you find the length you need for your bow. Tie off an end with a small elastic band, and cut off the excess. Now you have the foundation for your bow!

Step 2: Tying and Melting

You'll need to tie off the other end of your hair strip, making sure the nub (so to speak) is as short as possible. Next, you'll need to overlap the ends, making sure the extension stays flat, and prepare to melt...

Take your rag, make sure its fairly damp, and fold over the ends of the extension. Now you're going to take your straightening iron and melt the hair together, over the rag to prevent a fire hazard. This sounds horrifying, and you'll experience some sizzling sounds and smoke, but its all for the sake of your future pseudo up-do. The rag keeps both your straightener and weave safe, and at the end, you can use the bare flat iron to secure.

Step 3: The Hard Part

Now that you have a crispy loop, you want to take 2 small elastics and secure the center of what will be your bow. It gets a little tricky to maintain the shape of the bow, but don't get frustrated. I admit, I nearly gave up. If you have a friend help you by holding the bow as you adjust, it's much easier. Next, you'll have to loop a piece of hair around the center in order to finish up the bow.

Get a long piece of your extension (you'll cut of the excess later) and as your buddy holds your bow for you, wrap the hair about 3 times around the center of the bow, and secure with an elastic behind the hairpiece. Bobby pin down a bit of the ponytail behind the bow, and then cut off the excess with scissors, making sure that it doesn't show from the front.

This is what you should end up with!! Cute, right?! You'll probably feel that your bow is a bit disheveled, but use some scissors to cut off stray hairs, and you're finger tips to adjust the shape and it will fall naturally once it's on your head, don't worry!

Step 4: Attachment and Eternal Happines

Now that your bow is pieced together, you want to be able to attach it to your head, don't you? Because I have short hair, I figured using a jumbo duck-bill clip would be the best idea. If you want, you can use a head band or head wrap. Once you choose what best suits your hair, attach it to the bottom of your bow using a hot glue gun.

Congratulations, you now have the most adorable hair accessory imaginable. Hello Kitty, eat your heart out!

I can't wait to wear this beauty to class with some bodysuits and tulip skirts. D.I.Y. Cuffed Prepster Shorts

Here's another DIY!!

A few weeks ago, I posted a pair of cute, cuffed self-made prepster shorts and a few of you wanted to know how I put those little beauties together. On my thrift adventure yesterday I stumbled upon these lightweight, grey slacks that fit me horrendously and saw the potential they had to be the perfect cuffed shorts. So my dears, here is a tutorial on how to make your dream Prepster shorts out of a pair of these...

What You'll Need:

1) A pair of high-waisted grandpa trousers

2) Needle and matching thread

3) Lots of pins and a pin cushion

4) Measuring tape

5) A cutting mat and rotary wheel (or a simple pair of scissors)

6) An iron

Step 1: Measure

Put your trousers on and measure how long you want your trousers to be. Once you know your desired length, add about 3 inches to the length for you to make you cuff(s). Then cut...

Step 2: Snip snip...

Lay your trousers on your cutting mat and cut at the length that you found with your rotary wheel. If you don't have these cutting supplies then just lay your trousers flat, mark your length, and cut straight across with scissors. Like this...

Throw your scraps to the side. Now you've taken a pair of dinky old pants and have completed the first step towards your new adorable shorts. This is about what they should look like...

Step 3: Pin, iron and sew your first cuff

This step varies a bit depending on the fit of your trousers and how much excess length you left. Mine had a lower crotch so my first cuff is just a teeny fold, but yours may be an inch long or so. Pin down your first cuff, making sure that the length stays even all around the leg, and that both sides are symmetrical. Once you're done pinning, iron down the crease so that the cuff lays flat. Now, sew the cuff down using a blind-hem technique. When you're all done, iron again so that everything is nice and flat.

Step 4: Pin, iron and sew your final cuff

Now that you have your first cuff sewn and ready, take a look at where you want your final cuff to hit by trying on your shorts. When I tried mine on I figured that an inch long cuff would be perfect. Next, pin down your desired cuff and iron flat. Now, flip your shorts inside out. You'll be sewing your cuff using the blind hem again, but this time from the inside. If you've never sewn using a blind hem technique here is what it looks like:

Its actually really simple (and my favorite way to do quick hand-sewing jobs). All you do is make a tiny stitch(as small as you can possibly make it) from the back of the shorts through to the front of the cuff and back. Then you leave some space (.5"-1") and do it over and over until you're finished. As you can see from my photo, theres no need to be perfect, the whole point is to make sure that you're stitches can't be seen from the front. I suggest looking up blind-hem tutorials on YouTube so that you can get a better idea of how exactly to make this stitch. Trust me, you're going to love it!

Once you're done sewing up your cuffs, remove the pins and iron, iron iron! You want your shorts to look sophisticated and pressed, don't you! No one will believe that you made these yourself!

Step 5: Try on your new favorite shorts!

Here is a look at how my new shorts turned out. I love them because the top of my original trousers were very pleated, and now that they're shorts they have a sweet, pouffy bloomer silhouette.

I really hope that this tutorial is helpful! All in all, this project took me about 2 hours. Just pop in a DVD of your favorite TV series and it will all go by in a flash. I watched Gossip Girl while crafting my geek-chic shorties. Just throw on a pair of cute tights and your favorite blouse and these shorts will be your favorite cozy piece of the season. Aren't they so polished?

Sheer Beauty:

Happy Friday!

My obsession with sheer layers of mesh, lace, and chiffon is here to stay. Yesterday I put on the most cozy yet romantic outfit consisting of a few of my favorite pieces. My pink lace top is from the lingerie section of the thrift store (the best place to find hidden treasures). Underneath the lacy-layer, I wore a mesh bodysuit from Urban Outfitters with an American Apparel tube bra and paired that with sheer tights, my self-made prepster shorts and ballet flats. If you didn't know, it's freezing here in Gainesville -literally- so I threw on one of my tan faux-fur coats before stepping out for the day.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank all of the loyal Tonnish Touch readers! Yesterday I got the chance to meet one of you and I was so touched that I couldn't help but post twice today! It really means so much to know that you all enjoy the blog. I have a lot of plans for the new year and want to update much more frequently. Bonjour!

I was feeling very festive the other day because I just got accepted to do a Spring Break study-abroad program in Paris!! I can't wait to spend the week exploring museums, twirling through gardens, and eating adorable macaroons. While I was studying in Italy, I took a long weekend to explore Paris with my friend Rob and we had an amazing time. We managed to cover a lot of ground, but I knew all along that I'd have to go back.

I decided to celebrate by wearing bright red lipstick and a striped skirt that I thrifted in Paris over summer. J'adore themed outfits! Here is my Parisian-inspired look:

My Adrienne Landau fur neck-warmer is one my few "fancy" treasures. I splurged on it over winter break with the fantasy of one day passing it along to my stylish, vintage-obsessed adopted daughter. It is absolutely precious and keeps me so warm during these chilly winter days.

Fare Una Bella Figura:

As some of you may know, I studied in Italy last summer. I took away so much from that experience and it really influenced my love for fashion. Italians have a beautiful sense of confidence with the way they wear clothes, and perhaps the most significant thing I learned from Italian style is "fare una bella figura". The people around me lived by this romantic theory of sorts. The "bella figura" is the impression you give off with your personal style. You want to look naturally beautiful and confident, but with ease. I remember just falling for men and women I saw on the streets checking their watches or putting on their sunglasses, every move they made seemed so graceful. Every "Ciao" melted my heart. The bella figura doesn't really have an exact definition, but more of an emotion associated with it, and it has everything to do with fashion and a sense of self.

I had to put my study of the "bella figura" to work on the day of my Urban Outfitters interview! I put together an outfit that I felt represented my style: a love of new and old, gentle femininity, and gioielli (jewels). Here are a few fuzzy pictures of what I wore to my UO interview:

Skipping Through The Streets of Philly:

I suppose I should fill you in on the big news before diving into this post...

I'm in Philadelphia right now because I have an interview with Urban Outfitters tomorrow for a buying internship!!!!

When I got the email saying that I'd been chosen for an interview my heart started racing so fast! This really is my dream come true!! I've always fantasized about being a buyer for a company that I love, and this is my chance! Tomorrow is the big day, I'll let you all know how it goes. (I have the perfect outfit picked out)

Anyways, I flew to Philly a day early because I've never been here and I was longing to explore. In conclusion, I am madly in love with this place. I spent most of my day on South Street, a cute stretch of town packed with vintage shops and restaurants and a magical garden. I'm so smitten with the spots I visited today that I'm putting together a little shopping guide of South Street for a future post. Here are some shots of my wonderful day:

Vintage Layer Cake:

Lately I've been really intrigued by layering and experimenting with new textures. Today I felt like using really delicate, sheer fabrics in order to create a gentle, feminine layered look. I collect vintage nightgowns, and I decided to wear one of my favorites underneath this sheer pink pleated skirt that I bought at a vintage boutique in Atlanta. I figured it would work perfectly because the top of the nightie has an adorable lace collar and is very blouse-like.I love that the lace hemline of the nightgown peaks out from beneath the skirt! I figured that my huge Betsey Johnson belt would contrast perfectly with such sweet fabrics. Here is a look at my outfit:

I had a lot of fun skipping around campus in this frilly ensemble. My favorite colors lately have been pale pinks, golds, and nude. Wait til I show you my new Betsey Johnson tutu...

Well, tomorrow I have two language finals and then I may not update until saturday afternoon because my fate is riding on the accounting exam that I have on Saturday morning, wish me luck! Worry not, I have some really fun projects coming up! First off, I just gathered up some supplies to create a longer, more wearable version of my tutu from the tutu-torial (this time in lavender). I will also be sewing up some really nifty leg-wear accessories, but I don't want to spoil any surprises. At times, I'm so confused as to what exactly my "style" is. I love it all: granny-chic, baby-doll dresses, ruffles and bows, boy-meets-girl, trekkie, vintage vixen, senorita...

So many things inspire me. With the current chill, I've been really inspired to pile on furs, frocks and silk scarfs. I've been channeling old hollywood glamour and mixing it with my everyday basics. Yesterday on my treasure-hunting adventure, I stumbled upon a beautiful vintage turban that I simply couldn't pass up. Here are some photos of my new hat, and a few of me playing with it:

I absolutely love this piece! In person, it is so delicate and in perfect condition. The cap itself is made of a thick lace, and the overlay is a fine creme and gold tulle. Here I'm wearing it with a vintage mink capelet and my new Betsey Johnson crinoline tutu. Definitely expect to see me wearing it with my new black coat!

These are the things that keep my happy and calm during finals week...

First and foremost: I am so sorry for the recent lack of updates! School has just become so hectic and now that finals are coming up I'm frantically preparing my color-coded index cards and highlighters for a week of studying. However, today was an absolutely fabulous Saturday, mainly because my boyfriend surprised me with a day of thrifting in Ocala, so I couldn't help but update about a few of my finds. Here's what I wore today:

Target ruffled cardigan, thrifted gold belt, Betsey Johnson heart tights, and DIY prepster shorts

Last night I was feeling crafty. I took a pair of vintage Levi's trousers that I thrifted a while back and decided to crop, hem, and cuff them into cute little prepster shorties. I have a feeling that shorts will be a key piece for winter layering. I love that they are part pin-up girl, part geek-chic, plus they're pleated! Let me know if you want any details on this fun make-over project. I would have posted a tutorial, but I pretty much improvised throughout.

As for today, I found a few amazing pieces while on my thrifting adventures, including a top reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" days, a beautiful 1950's turban cap, and a great pair of vintage frames that I'll be turning into sunglasses. But those things will have their own posts. I wanted to post about my favorite find of the day, an amazing black, fuzzy, faux-fur coat! Please excuse the silly photos, I couldn't help but twirl around in this beauty.

What do you think? I absolutely love it! Faux-fur is my latest obsession. A while back I posted about my brown faux-fur coat from Urban Thread. Over the Thanksgiving vaca, I also acquired this adorable leopard printed cropped jacket. This black coat is so glamorous though, I think it stands out on its own among the collection. It makes me feel like an old Hollywood movie star! I cant wait to pair it with sequin tops and dresses. Like I said, expect quite a few more posts before my cramming frenzy begins!

Sorry about the slight lack of posts lately! Last week was absolutely hectic for me, three midterms in one week! As of now things have cooled down until finals (at least I think), so expect lots of great updates from The Tonnish Touch.

Today's post is a look at some of the wonderful tutus that were inspired by my Tutu-torial. First of all, I got so much great feedback about this post, thank you to everyone who enjoyed the tutorial and especially to those who tried it out!!

I wore my tutu to an on-campus event hosted by Reitz Union Board: Entertainment (which I happen to be a proud member of). I dressed up as a fluffy cloud. I made my head-piece and tutu from recycled tulle. All of the other elements of my costume were straight from my closet: AA tank, Target tights, Steve Madden flats, Vintage silver leotard, Granny's pearls.

This is my friend, Amanda. She dressed up as a stunning ballerina for Halloween. I love how voluminous her tutu is! This girl is tutu-cute!

Here is my gorgeous friend, Gretchen. Her mini-tutu is absolutely adorable! The cropped length makes the shape irresistible. Is it so wrong to want to wear this every day?

Thanks again to my lovely friends for letting me post their fabulous tutus. You guys were so creative and looked amazing! Did anyone else try out the tutorial? Let me know! I'm hoping to attach a slip to mine so that I can defend it as "wearable" in everyday life. Hah, we'll see how it goes. Are there any new requests for things you'd like to see on our blog? Street Style: Amber

Yesterday I was strolling towards my Italian class when I saw a vintage cutie sitting on a bench. When I asked her if I could photograph her, I realized it was Amber, the adorable singer from one of my favorite local bands, Platine! First of all, you guys should really check out this band, they are awesome. Plus, their house show/parites are amaaazing! Second, let's admire her style, shall we? I was immediately drawn to her floral skirt, glasses, and cute shoes. Here's a full body shot:

These vintage frames stole my heart. I recently put prescription lenses into a pair of my own. They are a gift from her granny! I don't care what anyone says, dorky glasses are the greatest!

Even My Wheels Are Trimmed In Lace:

I'm not sure about you guys, but in my life everything serves as an accessory. All of my appliances, tools, and everyday items are pastel, lace, or ruffled in nature, be it a coffee machine, clip-board, , pens, or a bike. I don't know what it is but when simple things come in a cute color or pattern, it makes going on with everyday tasks all the more pleasant.

My bike is one of my most treasured possessions. It is a gift from my sweetheart, a project that we started before we were even an "item", and has evolved into one of my loveliest and most fun belongings. It started out as on old, unwanted bike, and is now a cupcake on wheels. It had been a while since I wanted a top tube protector, because people at our campus bike racks really seem to lack any courtesy. It is really hurtful to knock over and scratch someone else's bike for the sake of parking your own, don't you think? Anyway, that is what inspired me to do this little DIY project, and it ended up turning out rather wonderful. Here's a peek at my bici with its new accessory:

I wanted it to be girly, of course, and I was so lucky to find this LACE-printed plastic to layer over a deep purple. The foam interior protects my pastel paint job from evil.

Friends of the Library Book Sale:

This is the first year I've gone to the Friend's of the Library book sale (off North Main St behind the Junior League thrift store) and I'm pretty pissed at myself for it because it's like heaven for book lovers. I can't believe I only have one more to attend in the spring and then I'll never get to go again. Anyway, I picked up a good number of books that I'm pretty excited about reading. I don't care that this has nothing to do with fashion because I get asked about books constantly. So here's what I got:

This is a beautiful old copy of The Stranger. I really love old copies of books. This one and the Vonnegut book are actually from The Humane Society thrift store in Ocala, which I got for 40 cents each. Yeaaah

Effortless Beauty:

You know, every day I pretty much dress like a maniac. I pile on tons of jewels, ruffles, and the shiniest shoes that I can find. But it is really the girls who are so effortlessly chic who I envy the most. You know, those girls who can just pull their hair back, wear a classic top, skinnies, minimal jewelry, and look like a stunner. I caught Ching-Ya Ni out of the corner of my eye and couldn't help but ask for her photograph. She just looked so cool and naturally beautiful. Take a looksie:

Everyday as I rush from class to class, dodging people on my bike and dorkily dropping all of my things on the ground, it can really be a breath of fresh air to see someone who put caring thought into their outfit. I know that for me, getting dressed in the morning is a special treat, the calm before the storm, as my weekdays are typically so hectic. A polka-dot romper or a pearl collar can really make the news of a pop quiz or an upcoming project a bit lighter on my shoulders.

Well, today as I was rushing out of Italian class, I saw Lauren sitting by the library and I thought that she really had a look of her own. The little details like her feather earrings, pompom flats, and teeny vest are what drew me to her. Plus, I was amazed at how budget savvy this girl was! Check her out:

This update is a bit random, I apologize.

A while back I bought this wonderful faux-fur jacket at Urban Thread. I absolutely love it! This past weekend was surprisingly chilly and my jacket kept me warm and cozy throughout the ordeal. The satin bow is lovely because you can tie it with an over-sized bow, a mini bow-tie, or the ribbons can flow loosely. I think it channels both a 50s vixen and Lil Kim.

I have also fallen for a wonderful vintage accessory that I wish was still common today: Vintage Shoe Clips! They are simple in theory, but add such beauty to your flats and heels. I'm hoping to make some of my own. They take your shoes from this....

To this! So pretty, right? These are lovely mother-of-pearl with gem details.

The long weekend gave me a lot of time to do some serious thrifting and sewing. I adjusted so many skirts and dresses, I'll be posting those very soon. I have lots of ideas in the works right now, but I'll have to keep them secret until everything is set in stone. There's a chill in the air so hopefully I can post some lovely street style looks this week!

Due to academic obligations, my being born in 1989, and sheer exhaustion, I haven't been going out very much lately. For the most part I've been seeking relief by thrifting, making girly crafts, and modifying vintage finds into modern beauties. Since we were so fortunate to have a long weekend, I figured I deserved a break and decided to step out last night in full "geek chic" attire. We went to this fabulous house party where the theme was anything GLBT. Of course there were some amazing outfits. I only had the bright idea to start photographing by the end of the party, but I did capture some sweet looks. Here's a peek:

All in all it was a great night, and I'm totally embracing the mini cold front happening here in Gainesville. I was wearing a fun mix of vintage and new pieces. My blazer, blouse, and oxfords are from Urban Outfitters, my hot pink trousers, beaded bag, and belt are vintage. Oh, and I merchandised the outfit up with geek glasses and vintage cardigan clips! I didn't get to do much shopping this past week, too much work and too little time. Of course I managed to squeeze a little treasure or two into my weekend. On Friday, Leah told me that Wolfgang had gotten some new accessories in, and that there was a bow ring that I absolutely needed. Of course, I stopped in and snatched it up! Here's a looksie:

Wolfgang has a ton of mesh gold and silver rings in right now. Leah and I both bought this bowified beauty are wearing it non-stop! I love that it matches perfectly with my Betsey bow watch. Oh, and that amazing neck-piece is the pearl collar that Leah gave me for my birthday. I'm obsessed!

Another amazing find I came across this weekend is Essie's "Matte About You" matte finisher. My bestie Agnes discovered it and it looked so cool on her I just had to try it. This product is absolutely amazing! Basically it is a shine-free top coat that when applied over any of your favorite nail colors, gives you a matte finish that is so glamorous and beautiful.

This is a picture of my current "matte" manicure. This red polish is normally super shiny and even has sparkle, but with the "matte" finisher it looks like my nails are channeling Dita Von Teese. I love it. The best thing is that matte nail polish colors are normally so expensive and really difficult to find, but by buying this simple top coat it gives you the option of changing any of your current hues into fashion forward, luster free lacquers. I'm buying this ASAP!

DIY: The Perfect Tutu

Lately I've been on the search for a perfect tutu. I tried finding one at last weekend's Hippodrome Costume Sale, but had no luck. Finally, I decided to take things into my own hands. I tried to keep it green by using post-consumer materials. I went to a local thrift store and bought a bunch of tulle that someone had just thrown away, and I also bought a little .50 baggie full of old elastic and sewing materials. I was so happy that I got everything that I needed for my tutu for less than $3, all while reducing waste. Here is your guide for creating a beautiful tutu:

What You'll Need:

A cutting mat and rotary wheel, or measuring tape and scissors if you choose to do this by hand. Trust me, it was soo much easier with a smooth cutting surface and cutting wheel.
1/2"-1" elastic
A sewing machine or needle and thread
A hand weights or small a paperweight to hold down your tulle, I used my unicorn paperweight and a light handweight. Soup cans will do the trick though.
Lots and lots of tulle. I suppose the amount you buy (or thrift) depends on how voluminous you'd like your tutu to be. I'd say that I used about 3 yards.

Step 1:

In order to make your waistband, take your elastic and wrap it around yourself exactly where you want your tutu to hit. I wanted mine to be high-waisted, so I wrapped it right around the center of my belly, above my belly button. Make a mark. Next, you want to take 2 inches off of your waist measurement. So, if you measured your waistband to be 27" long, cut it to 25", that way it will have some stretch and will simultaneously add volume to the skirt.

Now to sew. This is the only sewing required for this project, phew! Take your band, overlap the ends by about 1", and using either your sewing machine or needle and thread, secure the waistband shut. Since I don't trust my hand sewing skills, I used my machine in order to ensure a heavy duty stitch.

Step 2:

This can get a little tedious, but it is so worth it. Use your measuring tape and measure how long you want the skirt to be. I wanted mine to fall about 16" below the waistband. Now, take your desired measurement and DOUBLE it(extremely important!). This is how long your are going to cut your strips of tulle. So, I cut mine to be 32" long. You want to make your rectangular panels 6" wide x your desired length. This is where the cutting mat and rotary wheel come in handy. Cut away until you have a nice big pile of tulle strips. Use your weights to hold down the tulle as you cut. This will keep the fabric from shifting and thus your fabric panels will be as close to identical as possible. You wan't your tutu to look neat!

Step 3:

Actually putting the skirt together is the simple part! I found it easiest to pull the elastic band over my thighs in order to keep it stretched out and in place. Next, take your first strip of tulle, pull it under the elastic and fold it in half. Make the ends meet, and then tie a double-knot around the elastic. Thats it! Just keep on adding strips of tulle next to each other and secure them with double knots. Check out these photos for a better idea:

See, each little bunch is a double-knot. Just knot each strip one at a time and bunch them up next to each other until you fill the elastic band.

Voila! You've made your very own beautiful tutu! Here are a few pics of how mine turned out:

Trust me, you'll find yourself wearing your tutu while studying and doing simple chores around the house. This piece is so fun and effortlessly beautiful, perfect for a whimsical day-look or a cute Halloween costume. I think that I am going to add a slip to mine, since it is a bit transparent. I hope that this tutorial is helpful to you! It is my first real tutorial, so let me know if you have any questions or if you need anything to be clarified. You will love your tutu, I just know it. My friends are always dead-on when it comes to what I love. I suppose that my style is super easy to read. Anything granny, frilly, girly, and/or pink will do the trick! I am so lucky to have such caring friends, I really can't believe all of the beautiful things that I was gifted for my birthday! Here's a little looksie:

Leah gave me this amazing pearl necklace that doubles as a collar. I think her exact quote was "It was just so crazy, only you could wear it". She knows me so well!

Check out this amazing bow bracelet! I did a little research, and it's vintage Givenchy! Leah gave it to me early. Now I can't live a day without wearing it.

These are two pairs of amazing old lady glasses that I thrifted forever ago. My amazing boyfriend is taking them in to have my prescription lenses put on, I can't wait to wear them to school! The ones on the bottom are vintage Gucci!

Agnes gave me the new Sartorialist photo book, it is amazing! She also bought me this beautiful hot pink winter coat with a white fur collar, so glamorous!

My long time bestie, Lindsay, got me amazing vintage accessories. I'm all over this translucent tulip scarf. She also got me an adorable quilted bag and bangles to match!

Zaira got me the ultimate granny purse! It is so beautiful, super structured with a mother of pearl handle and trimmings. The beading is in perfect condition. I'm in love.

My parents got me a few vintage treasures on our adventures together this weekend, but I think that deserves a whole post in itself. I had the greatest, most relaxing birthday. I hope you enjoyed these festive posts. More to come!

My Lovely Potluck Picnic:

This Sunday was my 20th birthday, and I had an absolutely wonderful day. I had a great weekend in general because it was full of adventures and treasure hunting with friends and family. Saturday morning I woke up bright and early with my newly coiffed boy and we drove out to Haile Plantation and visited a boatload of yard sales. Then my family arrived and we were off to the Hippodrome Costume Sale in search of theatrical accessories. (Photos of the spoils of these treasure hunts coming soon) The rest of Saturday was spent fine dining, catching up, and even included an impromptu trip to Winters Past.

Sunday was a special day because I spent the day lounging in the shade with all of the people that I adore. I hosted a "Lovely Potluck Picnic" where we all munched on delightful picnic food and amazing sweet treats while dressed in our whimsical autumn best. I had a great time eating and chatting, and cutting my to-die-for Hello Kitty birthday cake. Here are some pictures of the greatest afternoon ever:

THE Nail Polish, For Less!

Not to sound like a dweeb, but I felt so ahead of the times when I saw that every blogger, style site, and magazine was flipping out over the Chanel "Jade" nail polish that was all over their last runway show. I had been wearing the exact same color since last winter! It's an adorable pastel-green O.P.I. nail color, appropriately called "Hey! Get In Lime!". I'm not sure if this color was discontinued, but I got it for about $8 at my local Trade Secret store. You should try and get your hands on some! I wore it here.

I am madly in love with anything in clutch-form. I wish that I could just wear teeny clutch purses all day rather than lugging a giant bag around. Either way, I get tons of wear out of my miniature accessories. Here are a few of my latest finds:

A few weeks ago I snagged this clutch-wallet at a thrift store for $3. I love it because it has so many compartments, and even fits my iPhone in it. No need for a purse here! Doesn't it look a lot like a Hobo clutch, but better?

Every Friday afternoon I shed away the stresses of my week by hitting up one or two thrift stores. I found this gorgeous mesh clutch today. It looks like one of those giant clams that opens up to reveal a beautiful treasure inside. The best part is....

It was part of a set! Love this long kiss-lock clutch!

So much beauty for only $6. I love Fridays...

Well, this Sunday is my 20th birthday. I am having a cutesy little potluck picnic at the Thomas Center gardens with my friends and family at noon. My only problem: I haven't picked out an outfit yet! I found a very pretty lace top at the thrift store today, perhaps that tucked into a high-waisted skirt will work? I'll keep you updated. A few of my friends have already given me beautiful gifts, but I'm going to do a gift post once the weekend is over. Look forward to it! Also, I forgot to mention that I got a haircut! Winter's Past Vintage

Hello lovelies,

Get excited because I'm about to share a yummy vintage treat with you. I don't normally like reveal my hot spots, but I feel like I should share this with our loyal readers. So here it is: Winter's Past Vintage is the mecca of vintage jewelry. My heart squealed with joy when I walked into this new-found treasure trove. I spent at least an hour in there, unfortunately for my brother. Disclaimer: this is not a thrift store, so expect to pay vintage prices (e.g. $15-20 for most items). Totally worth it though. I found most of this stuff in the back room, which is the "make me a deal" room. Loveeeed it.

So, fine, I guess I should tell you where it is. It's in McIntosh, which if you live in Gainesville, is just a short trip heading south down Highway 441, or what we also called SW 13th St., on Avenue G. It's about 20 minutes from the Gville. Have fun.

Essentially, everything pictured was $10 all together except the shield ring on the right which was $10. Oh and I turned that bow tie into a necklace, which I'm really loving. I ended up spending a good amount because I found Flavs the most beautiful mesh bow bracelet of LIFE for her birthday. It's perfect and even though it was a week early, I had to give it to her that day. Look out for an upcoming pic.

Really though, what feels better than finding something beautiful at a thrift store?

As I come to realize that I am actually an 80 year old woman trapped in an (almost)20 year old body, I become more and more obsessed with piling on vintage baubles and accessories over my high-waisted skirts and lace blouses. Here are a few of my recent vintage treasures that are taking over my accessory repertoire:

One of the first things that I do when I wake up is put at least 3 accessories on each arm.

The buckle bangle is from a random vintage jewelry shop along the highway, the tulip bracelet is actually from Persona vintage! I got it on Fashion's Night Out. The contoured ring is another thrift store find.

Do you ever find a pair of shoes that you think are so cute that you don't want to wear them? This is one of mine. They are an Urban Thread find. The perforation is so adorable, totally granny. They're sitting atop my beautiful vintage picnic basket, fully equipped with the plates, cutlery, and tumblers fit for a romantic picnic for two.

Wicker basket + needlepoint embroidery = my dream bag!

I found this antique beauty at Loop de Loop a little while back and I am simply obsessed. I love that it is extremely structured and I can manage to squeeze in all of my lipstick options, iPhone, wallet and even a rolled up cardigan. It is also perfect for sneaking snacks into movie theaters.

Also, I am in DESPERATE need of more hair advice! I am getting my hair cut for the first time in forever this Saturday and I have no idea what to do! Bowified Booties:

Today, I found the fall ankle-booties that were created for me. I had seen these beauties online a few weeks back, but the $390.00 price tag was a way too steep for me. I figured that I would thrift a pair of old black booties and then just add the bows on myself. Well, I saved a lot of time and money ($332.00 to be exact) by snagging these at Urban Thread today!! Happiest moment of my life! These amazing Chie Mihara Atame ribbon bow booties are an absolute dream. They are so comfy and the leather is so soft. These are going to go beautifully with all of my crocheted tights, blazers, and tunics for fall. Scholarly-chic, here I come!

DIY: Brooch and Earring Frame

A few weeks ago on a thrift trip, I found this amazing frame in a bin for only $1. It was perfect for a DIY project that I had in mind. I went to another thrift store and found a sheet of vintage lace, whipped out my staple gun, and went to work. The end result was this awesome brooch and earring frame. It is perfect for displaying earrings and keeping your vintage brooches and cameos safe from harm. I absolutely love it!

The Perfect Peep-Toes:

In the middle of spring, I had blogged about these amazing Betsey Johnson floral peep-toe pumps. A few weekends ago, I made a quick stop by the Prime Outlets in Orlando. Obviously, I just had to sneak into the Betsey Johnson outlet. To my astonishment, my dream shoes were there, and for only $60! I bought them on impulse. Here's a look at my new loves:

Street Style: Jessica and Troy

I spotted this hot duo at Skyy bar on Friday night while waiting for the Dahlia and BobbyK fashion shows. Are they not amazing looking?! When I asked where her sick harem pants were from, she answered "My mom's closet"! Go figure! These authentic 70's pants look amazing paired with a slinky cami and serious neck candy. I was honestly stalking this girl all night. The story behind Troy is that this wasn't our first fashion-oriented interaction. I've already nearly died over his style once before on a crosswalk near campus. I was kicking myself for not photographing him last time, so I knew that tonight I just couldn't let him slip away. I love that he pairs his edgy jeans and sneaks with geek-chic layering of a cardi, tie and button up. These two were my favorite pair of the night!

Fashion Week Recap: BobbyK

The BobbyK fashion show was really interesting because it was actually like four fashion shows in one. The show was split by themes, the first being super bubblegum pink and girly. The second was a little bit darker, but still sexy and fun. The third theme seemed more oriented towards evening, with shiny purple minidresses and puff-sleeves. The final walk was totally lady gaga-esque sexy leotards and party dresses. The show was titled "In Love With a Robot", and you could just imagine all of these sexy space-age dream girls on the prowl for true inter-galactic love. The show was lots of fun, and had tons of looks! Here are some snapshots:

I love that although the concept was very fun and experimental, I can totally see myself in a hot pink, completely ruffled dress or bubblegum colored genie pants. I wonder when these will be available for sale?! I'll be sure to let you know when you can get your robot hands on some of these funky looks!

The Dahlia fashion show exemplified how fall can still be flirty and girly. The color palette was very focused around black and royal blue, with adorable pops of fuschia and patterns. Each piece had adorable detailing, like ruffles, bib necklines, or sequins. You should definitely rush over to Dahlia asap if you plan on getting your hands on any of these pieces, because everything was so cute and flattering as well. What I love about Christy from Dahlia's taste is that every piece is super girly and adorable, but still really classic and makes a great statement. None of these looks will go out of style. Fashion Week Recap: Fashion's Night Out

Fashion's Night Out was soo much fun! Leah and I, along with two of our besties (Zaira and Agnes), set out to tear this town apart with our debit cards on Thursday night. We did some serious damage to say the least.

We started out at Dahlia (on NW 43rd St) and enjoyed chatting with Christy about her upcoming fashion show. Zaira and Agnes left with a couple of super cute tanks. Here are some pics of Dahlia:

We got to shop while muching on mini-cupcakes and pink champagne.

After checking out Dahlia, we made our way over to perhaps my favorite little boutique in Gainesville, Loop de Loop! If you've never been, Loop de Loop is on NE 16th Ave, just past Main St. This store is a haven for beautiful vintage treasures and cute trinkets. We had so much fun chatting it up with the store owners and shopping around. I left with an adorable vintage neck-scarf that doubles as a cowl. I'll be sure to post pictures soon. We made quite a few more stops on our FNO adventure, including a necessary and expensive stop at American Apparel where we all bought sooo much stuff. We just had to take advantage of that amazing 25% discount! Next we headed over to Persona, an awesome vintage boutique on SE 2nd Place. They had really cool live mannequins posing throughout the store and each of us left with adorable accessories: Here's a picture of us with the owner and one of her original designs:

Oh, and that's the floral Audrey dress that was featured in the Wolfgang fashion show! Only $36!

After Persona, the girls and I enjoyed dinner and free wontons at Dragonfly, and then made our way over to some of the bars that were part of FNO. We were exhausted from walking and shopping that we made our way home after stopping by the Lux afterparty. Thank you so much to everyone who participated in Fashion's Night Out. We had so much fun shopping and socializing with local business owners. Leah and I, along with the rest of the Wolfgang team, worked SO hard to plan this night and we are so happy that it turned out to be such a great event. Did any of you guys go to Fashion's Night out? Fashion Week Recap: Wolfgang

The Wolfgang fashion was a great success. Leah and I worked our usual duties as backstage model dressers. It is always so much fun to watch the show come together. We always wish that we could enjoy the show, but the backstage atmosphere is so chaotic, I love it. Thank goodness my friend Caro was in the crowd to take photos of the actual show for me! There are a lot of great new things at Wolfgang that were featured in the show, like this cute (and super affordable) line called Audrey, as well as the ever-cute Roberta Oaks, Cheap Monday, and Insite. Fashion Week Recap: Calzatura

Tuesday night was the start of Fashion Week mahem. It was a lot of fun though because Wolfgang was headlining with Calzatura, and since Leah and I were helping backstage with the Wolfgang show, we got to sit back and enjoy the Calzatura showcase. It was really fun watching everyone get ready. The Calzatura show had a great downtown feel to it. All of their looks were great for going out. Here are some pics from the evening, and some of my favorite looks from the show:

This was definitely my favorite look from the Calzatura show. I love the cupcake silhouette, and the black stripes add an edgy vibe to this otherwise uber girly dress. I love that. Sweet-heart tops are the best!

If you havent already been to Calzatura, it is downtown on SE 2nd Ave, by Starbucks. The owner is super friendly and you'll be sure to find an abundance of sparkle and mini-dresses. Fashion's Night Out in Gainesville

FNO was aaaamazing! Thanks so much to everyone who came out to show their support. It was a better turnout than we expected, and a lot of store owners gave us great feedback.

Anyway, Flavia, Agnes, Zaira and I shopped like crazy bitches for about 4.5 hours, and we all made out pretty damn well. We went to Dahlia, Loop de Loop, Wolfgang, American Apparel, Persona, Dragonfly, and Lux at the end of the night. I wish we could have gone everywhere, but shopping and sushi took precedence. So Wolfgang's fashion show was this past Tuesday, and it was really fun. Flavia and I helped out once again with dressing/redressing the models for the show. I was in charge of the boys, which was kinda weird/cool. Basically, I was in the bathroom with 5 half-naked boys. Not a terrible place to be. Flavs was in the thick of it with the gals, which is always total madness. I think I much preferred the guys. Anyway, she's got all the good pics. It's Gainesville Fashion Week!

GFW it's going to be craaaazy. Tomorrow night (Tuesday) is the Wolfgang fashion show at Sharab at 11:30 pm, which Flavia and I will be helping with. Stop by to say hi, and let us take a pretty picture of you for our blog! We'll be picture-taking all night long I'm sure, then dressing models for the runway. I helped with styling a bit today and saw a sneak peak of what will be in the show. The hair is inspired by the Marc Jacobs 2009 runway show and there's lots of huge statement jewelry in the show. Looking forward to blogging about it!

I scored these Free People beauts from Urban Thread. They're furry inside, so I have a feeling they'll be a staple of mine for fall.

I got these Jeffrey Campbells from Urban Thread as well. I look like a kook in them, and I love them for that reason.

These Sam Edelman's were on super sale at Bloomingdale's recently, so I snagged them. It's hard to tell from the picture, but they cuff high up the ankle.

These little treasures are from Loop de Loop, one of mine and Flavia's favorite stores in Gainesville. Flavs got the sister to the butterfly on the right. Just some more bubberflies to add to our collection. Oh and that little creature is a Triceratops, my favorite dino. One of the kids I nanny for bought it from The Dollar Tree for me =)

I bought this beauty at Community Thrift Store in Orlando when I was there for a day trip this week. It was like $20 but totally worth it. I can't wait to hang her on my wall.

Books I've Read This Month

So I know this is a fashion blog, but recently, I've been too obsessed with reading to blog about fashion. For this reason, I wanted to share some books that I've read over the past month and really enjoyed.

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

This book made me happy to be young and alive. Wilde is particularly insightful about these two subjects. He was a playwright and this is his only novel. He was imprisoned for being an open homosexual in a time when it was not accepted, and this book is sprinkled with hints of that nature.

My Uncle Oswald by Roald Dahl

This book is a fucking riot. If you were obsessed with R.D. as a kid like I was, you'll love his only adult novel. He's insanely provocative and wildly funny.

Downtown Owl by Chuck Klosterman

Klosterman is typically a pop culture writer, so his novels are rich in references of the kind. That's what I especially enjoyed about this book, which was set in the small town in North Dakota in the '80s.

I'm currently reading The Best of Roald Dahl, which is a collection of his short stories. Once again, Roald Dahl is one of my literary heroes. I enjoy his snipey, quick-witted and sinister writing style. His short stories are especially evil, which I am loving.

I JUST started reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. I bought a book with the entire series in one book, which is convenient, although it's massive and won't be fun to ride my bike with. Still figuring this one out: anyone read it?

If you have any suggestions, let me know. I'm always looking for new books to read and I like recommendations very much.

Little Beauties:

School has started back up and my obnoxiously hectic lifestyle is back in action. However, I've been re-inspired by the "back to school" attitude and have tried to show that in my outfits. I've been sporting my vintage leather backpack, jumpers, and mini-dresses for the past few days now and it makes my school days slightly more serene. If you see the crazy girl on a hot pink and purple bike, thats me.

So, the latest adorable accessory that has just been stealing my heart is these teeny little clutch/wallets that I have been accumulating this summer. My regular sized wallets usually die on me and it's a real hassle when I am trying to squeeze my lipstick, iPhone, digital camera, keys and wallet all into a vintage clutch. So these palm sized change purses are my new obsession.

Here's my current collection:

Ive managed to steal both of the brown leather ones from my mom's collection, they are from her college days! The white one is Dooney & Bourke. The gold leather one is vintage and it travelled all over Italy with me. It fold out into an actual wallet.

Here's a close-up of my personal fav. One of my besties, Zaira, bought this for my while exploring thrift stores in Amsterdam. Check out that diamond encrusted bow clasp....so cute!

Despite my dwindling bank account balance, I have been managing to acquire quite a few beautiful new treasures. Thus, I'll have plenty to blog about in the upcoming days. Look forward to seeing precious vintage treasures that I found on a recent romantic thrifting expedition, as well as some incredible Urban Thread finds!

New Loves:

It goes without saying that I've been really inspired by my adventures in Italy. Living out of my suitcase full of high-waisted skirts, leotards, ruffled tops, and dresses was so much easier than I ever thought it would be. Italian girls had really flirty style, but the main thing that I was lusting over while I was there was the way that they accessorize! All I do now is pile on the jewels, and I am on the hunt for the craziest gladiators under the sun. I found a lot of great treasures while in Europe, and continued my search as soon as I hit the motherland. Here are some of my latest obsessions:

I bought these black gladiators upon my return because I wore my favorite pair of black Sam Edelmans throughout my trip. Needless to say, they had a rough trip. I figured these beauties from Aldo were fit to replace them.

These are my new heart and soul. I have been lusting over these long before I went on my trip, and after I got back I just knew that I couldn't go on without them! Leah says that these were basically made for me, and I think she's right. Every strap is a different color and texture. Be still, my heart!

I love my new fingershield. It makes me feel like part robot, part medieval princess. I bought it at a random street market in Rome. I'm wearing it here with my Forever21 bib necklace.

My new Swatch watch is my favorite piece of new arm-candy. It's huge but still really girly with rhinestone insets and a clear face frame. The best part is that I bought it in Paris, how exciting! I love piling bangles onto my arm with this piece. I can't live without these leather Florentine bangles.

There are still plenty of Italian-inspired posts to come, such as these dresses I snagged on my last day in the Eternal City. (Hint: one of them is a maxi-dress)

Of course, since I'm back in Gainesville I will be out and about on the lookout for more fashion inspiration, so be prepared. Leah and I have some big projects in mind! I hope that you've enjoyed the latest posts!

My Favorite Italian Accessory:

One of the beautiful places that I visited during my trip was the island of Ischia. This little paradise is a volcanic island, and the water here is very cherished for its healing and beautifying properties. This is why it is a law here that everyone taking a dip in these precious waters MUST wear a swim cap. I was elated when I heard this, and took it as an opportunity to buy my dream swim cap:

Honestly, who doesn't secretly love 3-d floral swim caps?! This was one of the fashion highlights of my trip, hehee. Wearing: Silicone floral swim cap, UO vintage inspired one-piece, and Diesel sunnies.

Hello Kitty Heaven:

I'm back!!

My trip in Rome was absolutely amazing. I think it really changed me and it was so exciting to be able to explore such a beautiful country over 6 weeks. Oh, and I also got to make a weekend trip to Paris! I have lots of photos of my adventures to come. You wouldn't believe how beautiful everything is in Rome and Paris. The fashion is absolutely amazing! One thing I really enjoyed doing was visiting stores and admiring the merchandising. Stores in Rome were so beautiful, equipped with chandeliers and giant paintings and couches and columns, everything was breathtaking. One of the most beautiful stores that I visited was a boutique on Via Del Corso, called Camomilla. I stopped by on the opening day and couldn't believe my eyes. This store was Hello Kitty themed, so obvi I died the instant that I walked in. Hopefully my pictures do it some justice, I hope you all are as enamored with this little slice of heaven as I am.

Hello Kitty scooter helmets, salt and pepper shakers, champagne, and purses?! Camomilla really stole a little piece of my heart. Let me know what you guys think! I really wish our stores paid as much attention to detail in terms of beautiful merchandising as some of the boutiques in Italy did. It really adds such a wonderful sense of whimsy and fantasy to the shopping experience.

The Uniform Project

Oy, so I know I'm a terrible blogger these days. Orlando has been kicking my ass, and I'm never home, so cut me some slack ya'll. Although, I can't lie... I'm online all day at my jobs, so I don't really have a legit excuse. I haven't been in the mood, ok!

For now, here's a little treasure a friend posted to Facebook that I've been pouring over. I've heard a bit about The Uniform Project, but I haven't really lurked it until now. Here's the deets: This girl, my new hero and dream girl (the more and more I look at her I realize she's a mix of Flavia and Shannyn Sossamon, so yes, my dream girl), is wearing the same dress (well, really 7 versions of the same dress) every day for a year in order to raise funds for the Akanksha Foundation, which is a grassroots non-profit dedicated to bringing education to slum children in India. She accessorizes like mine and Flavia's love child would with random and donated goods from eBay and Etsy. Swoooooon. I want to be her. Plus, it's an awesome way to find new Etsy treasures, which is my current obsession. Flavs, let's just do this for fun next semester. Enjoy!

Anyway, eventually I'll share some pics of my train trip and a few of the treasures I picked up. To be honest though, I didn't really shop that much. A girl's gotta eat and drink iced coffee, ya heard?

Porta Portese:

Well, a couple weekends back my god-sent Italian professor, Gianfranco, suggested that I check out the Porta Portese flea market here in Rome. I looked it up and it was supposedly legendary, so obvi, I had to go! I gathered up a group of girlfriends and we took the tram to the Porta Portese stop in nearby Trastevere. Let me tell you that this flea market was incredible! It was huge and they had everything that you could ever imagine: books and movies, beads, antiques, old VHS tapes, cooking utensils, random junk, and of course, vintage treasures. Unfortunately, we had limited time at this hidden gem, but I managed to leave with two incredible finds.

These vintage sunnies are just to die for! I had to do some intense bargaining for them but I ended up victorious. I'll have to update you with the designer later, but what I love most about these are the ivory-like color and the gold detailing. I can't lie, I'm obsessed with nude accessories right now.

Is it so wrong to be madly in love with your own wrist? I bought this beautiful vintage pearl bracelet from a little old lady selling random trinkets at the flea market. I think we both connected over our love for flowers and pearls, so she gave me an amazing deal. Did I mention that all of my transactions occured in Italian?

Here's a close-up of the beautiful bauble. The flower petals are an intricate lattice pattern, and I love the massive pearl center.

Needless to say, I had a wonderful time at the Porta Portese flea market. It is a major Roman tradition, occurring Sunday mornings from 6:30am-2:00pm. If you are ever so fortunate to be in Rome on a Sunday morning, trust me, it is so worth visiting!

I am so happy to have had a day of internet access. I am going to try to post as much as I possibly can before our hotel wifi crashes again. Some things to look forward to: yet another finger-shield ring, hello kitty paradise, floral swim caps, and an homage to bows.

She is the queen of flirty summer dresses, and honestly, I've never seen someone look more graceful in a maxi-dress. I'm absolutely obsessed with the mini-floral pattern! Plus, the oversized sunnies are the perfect bohemian touch. Come si dice.....dream girl?!

Spoils From My Florence Trip...and a Few Other Treasures

I feel so silly for not noticing that my last post was the 100th post on The Tonnish Touch! How exciting! I just wanted to say a quick thanks on mine and Leah's part to all of those who read and enjoy our blog. We get the butterflies just thinking about it <3

Well, my sincerest apologies about not being able to post as frequently as I initially wanted to. I'm finding that there are many cultural differences between Italy and America, and Internet obsession is one of them. There is only one dinky computer that our entire hotel has to share here in Rome, so basically I have to steal wifi in order to post for you dear readers. I wanted to quickly post about the beautiful things that I have acquired in Italy thus far. Here goes:

This is my silver finger shield-ring! I nearly flipped when I found it at a street market in Florence. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for more of these, I want to end up with robot-hands like Karl Lagerfeld.

These are what I mainly splurged on when I was in Florence. These are hand made leather and python bangles. I love them because they are gold plated, so they'll pass the test of time. I got two of them a few years ago and was kicking myself for not getting more. These are my pride and joy!

I bought this ring in a tiny boutique in Florence, I love it because it's huge and it wraps around your finger. It consists of a hand-painted murano glass gem and a ceramic flower, all cased in gold-plated bronze. I fell in love! The man who made it was so sweet!

I scored this hot -pink beauty at a street market as well. Come se dice...Birkin Bag look-alike!? I absolutely love it because of the gold hardware and super structured leather. I cant wait to wear it back home.

I bought these adorable purple shades here in Rome. The transaction was proudly accomplished completely in Italian! I love the contrast purple wings at the top. They are by Diesel, made here in Italy!!

Well, I need to close this up because I have class in 15 minutes, but expect more posts about shopping and street style in the near future. I'll be spending the weekend here in Rome, scavenging for dresses and gladiator sandals. Wish me luck! Exploring in Rome has been amazing. On this day in particular, I visited Hadrian's Villa, Villa D'este, and an amazing little restaurant in Tivoli that is located in an original Roman bath complex. All that I really packed for this trip was flowy, ruffled dresses and floral skirts. I absolutely love this dress because of the over-sized floral ruffles that make me look like a butterfly. Also, it has these great sketched flowers all along throughout the bodice. Oh yeah, I also got my hair cut a few days ago because my hair grew out way too fast and it was becoming unbearable. The experience was slightly frightening because of the language barrier, but it ended up being great.

Roman Holiday

I watched Roman Holiday just a few days before coming to Rome, and the movie is absolutely wonderful. I've been trying to channel Audrey Hepburn's style during my stay in Rome, wearing floral skirts, ruffled dresses, and bib tops everywhere that I go. I was so excited to go to the Bocca Della Verita here in Rome, because that is where one of my favorite scenes from the movie took place! Legend has it that this statue can decipher a liar from an honest person when you put your hand in its mouth. In other words, you will get your hand chopped off if you are dishonest. Needless to say, I made it out with all of my limbs intact.

Ciao, from Rome!

I've been here for about a week now, and the city is absolutely beautiful. Italians have an amazing sense of style. I don't know exactly how to explain it. Italian women have a very classy, breezy sense of style. They sport beautiful jeans or skirts with drapey tops, and despite the cobblestone streets, prance around in heels with ease. They don't feel the need to be too showy, their fashion sense is based around the idea of a "bella figura", where you embrace the womanly silhouette, but still leave much to the imagination. The men are sharp, usually wearing fitted dress slacks and button ups. Best of all is the man-bags. Men wear beautiful leather satchels, messenger bags, and brief cases that make me want to keel over and spend all of my money on leather arm candy.

I met this man at the Fontana di Trevi. I absolutely loved the red pants, but his aged leather bag is what nearly brought a tear to my eye. I have been super busy with class and Roman adventures, but tomorrow I am thinking of walking around to take more street style photos. Be prepared to see some beautiful people. Also, I want to take my first shopping trip soon, so as soon as I start doing damage, you'll be hearing about it. I hope all is well in the states!

Chicago first... we're flying there, thank god.

then a mere 20-hour ride to NYC...staying in the BK

next is Baltimore

and finally DC!

All on one of these!

I'm going with one of my oldest friends, Brittany, and we've already resigned ourselves to full-blown zombiedom on the ride to NYC and back home from DC. Hopefully we'll meet some interesting characters/real jokes on the rides so we don't go totally insane. 20 hours really is a long time....shit. I'll be sure to post amazing treasures from my trip when I return in two weeks!

P.S. i need to buy pepper spray for real.
